The increasing popularity of electric vehicles often raises the question of actual energy consumption. One method of determining energy consumption is to use the so-called State of Charge (SoC) in conjunction with the usable battery capacity.
The following formula is used to calculate the energy consumption in kilowatt hours (kWh):
Let us illustrate this with the following example. Assume an electric vehicle has an initial SoC of 70%. The full usable battery capacity is 77kWh, and the degradation is estimated at 5%.
This results in:
From this calculation, it can be concluded that the vehicle has consumed an amount of energy of 7,315 kWh during this period.
